Superstitions: House Moves

Superstitions - House Moves

Traditionally, spring is when the property market heats up, and people buy, sell, and move into new homes. A home is more than just bricks and mortar; it should provide security, shelter, and a sense of belonging – a feeling of being grounded. Therefore, it is no surprise that people take steps to guard against practical issues with insurance. However, many may also be interested in warding off superstitions by attracting good luck and prosperity.

Superstitions

It is hard to plan around, but it is thought to be bad luck to move property on a rainy day!

Many house moves are timed to happen on a Friday; however, this day of the week is considered unfortunate for many activities, including big moves.

It is better to time a move with a Waxing Moon, as this signifies a positive time of the month – full of promise and beginnings.

When moving to an apartment, especially one in the same building, never go down a floor. This is taken literally to mean “going down in the world.”

When moving, you should either take certain things with you or hope that they are offered to you as housewarming gifts.

Housewarming Gifts & Meanings

Coal – to keep you warm always.

Candle – so you will know light, even in the darkest of times.

Bread – to ensure you never go hungry.

Salt – to add flavour to your life.

Honey – for always knowing the sweetness of life.

Wine – so thirst is never an issue.

Olive oil – for good health and well-being.

Coin – symbolising prosperity for you.

Broom – helping you sweep away your troubles.

Before settling into your new home for an auspicious start, it is tradition to sprinkle salt into any hearths and the corners of each room. If you have children, this task is further enhanced if they carry out the ritual as they bring even more purity.

Maybe you have received a broom as a housewarming gift (as mentioned above), be cautious about where you place it. If left by a bed, spirits may jump from the bristles to the bed, casting a spell in their path! Similarly, you might not want to leave it propped up in a corner – this could attract strangers to your home, which may not always be desirable unless they happen to be your new neighbours bearing a welcoming gift!
